Project Brief

Culture Shock

For this project, we had to step out of our comfort zone and pick from a list of diverse cultures and design a logo suite, patterns, and packaging for it. The main goal of this project was to prepare us for designing for cultures that weren’t our own. We had to do extensive research on our cultures as well as other students’ in order for us to be able to crit and help out our classmates.

Process

Staying True to Research

Out of the list we were given, I chose Mongolia. At first, I though it was easy since I already knew some of their food and history. However, I was dreadfully wrong. Research was hard as I could find no examples of modern graphic design to go off of which proved as a huge obstacle. I looked up native animals to base the mascot from and found the Gobi Bear. It’s an endangered species that resides in the Gobi Desert and I felt like I finally got an idea. One of Mongolia’s famous dishes is buuz which is a dumpling dish that comes in many shapes and forms. With that in mind, I thought the dumpling shape would make a lovely paw pad. When it came to packaging, I wanted to pick shapes that fit the same vibe as the design.
